China is nearing completion of some of the most sophisticated weapons systems in the world, and in some areas, it has already overtaken its competitors, according to a report released by the Pentagon.
Beijing has made huge military leaps in recent years, partly due to Chinese laws that force foreign partners to disclose their technical secrets in exchange for being allowed into the massive Chinese market, the US defense intelligence report said. As a result of the "access to technology by any available means" policy, China is now at the forefront in several areas, such as the manufacture of military vessels, medium-range missiles, and supersonic weapons, with more than five times faster missiles than missile defense systems.
"The result of this multifaceted approach to technology acquisition is the PLA's arrival to the point where some of the world's most advanced weapon systems have been launched," said the report, titled "China's Military Power."
The report also notes that China's growing military strength and sophisticated capabilities in the air, sea, and space, as well as cyberspace, will enable it "to impose its will in the region."
Beijing is particularly focused on the possibility of a dispute with Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory.
A senior defense intelligence official told reporters at the Pentagon that he feared the development of the Chinese army would make his generals confident they could invade Taiwan.
However, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said China had not fought a war in 40 years, and the structure of its leaders and common elements lacked experience in real-world conflicts.
China is developing medium- and long-range Stealth bombers capable of hitting regional and global targets and could come into being by about 2025, the report said.
The official said China was keeping its military development secret by conducting tests in underground compounds, away from satellite cameras.
